The Basic Rules of Poker.
Poker is a card game that can be played in a variety of different ways. The three most popular types of poker are Texas Holdem, Omaha, and Seven Card Stud.
Texas Holdem: In Texas Holdem, each player is dealt two cards (hole cards) that are kept secret from the other players. Five community cards are then dealt face-up in the middle of the table. These community cards can be used by any player to make their best five-card hand. There are four betting rounds in Texas Holdem, and the aim of the game is to win as much money as possible from the other players by having the best hand or by bluffing them into thinking you have a better hand than you actually do.
Omaha: Omaha is similar to Texas Holdem, but each player is dealt four-hole cards instead of two. Again, five community cards are dealt face up in the middle of the table and can be used by any player to make their best five-card hand. There are four betting rounds in Omaha and the aim of the game is to win as much money as possible from the other players by having the best hand or by bluffing them into thinking you have a better hand than you actually do.
Seven Card Stud: In Seven Card Stud, each player is dealt seven cards throughout the course of the hand, three of which are dealt face down and four of which are dealt face up. The aim of Seven Card Stud is to make the best five-card hand using any combination of your seven cards. There are five betting rounds in Seven Card Stud and again, the aim is to win as much money as possible from other players by having the best hand or by bluffing them into thinking you have a better hand than you actually do.
The betting structure of poker.
The betting structure in poker determines how much money can be bet on each round and how many raises are allowed per round. The two most common structures are Fixed Limit (FL) and No Limit (NL).
In Fixed Limit games, there can only be a certain amount bet on each round (for example, $5/$10 means that $5 can be bet on preflop and flop rounds and $10 can be bet on the turn and river rounds). Raises must also be capped at a certain amount (usually double the big blind).
No Limit games have no restrictions on how much money can be bet on each round –players can go all-in if they want to! This means that NL games tend to be more ‘action packed’ than FL games since there is more money at stake in each round.
